Microblading 101

With all the buzz going on in the news right now about the woman in Missouri who was given 4 eyebrows thanks to a botched microblading job, it got me thinking that I wanted to do a blog post about all the information about what microblading is. We offer microblading at our salon, and having personally had my eyebrows microbladed myself, I can honestly say it’s some of the best money I’ve ever spent. I completely over-plucked my eyebrows in high school, and unfortunately they never grew back, so when microblading became a thing a few years ago I was all about it! Here’s what to know and what to expect when you get your eyebrows micro bladed:

What is Microblading?

  • Microblading is a cosmetic procedure that is considered semi-permanent

  • It lasts for 1-3 years depending on skin type and your skincare routine

  • Microblading is a procedure done by using a hand tool with ultra fine needles. Each 'hair' is gently etched into the skin, giving an incredibly natural and realistic look

  • This procedure can correct thinned brows from age, overly plucked brows, or you want more of a shape to your brow

  • The microblading technician chooses the pigment that best matches your skin tone and

What Should I Expect at my Appointment?

  • Be sure to avoid alcohol and aspirin 72 hours before your appointment as to not thin your blood

  • No facials 2 weeks prior

  • No spray tans within a week before your appointment, so your technician can pick your pigment according to your natural skin tone

  • When you arrive at your appointment, your brow technician will shape and style your brows then get your approval, as well a pick a pigment before the microblading process begins

  • Then, depending on the technician (most do), they will numb each brow with numbing ointment

  • Once the numbing ointment has had a while to set in, the procedure begins. The entire appointment lasts around 3-3.5 hours

  • After 4-6 weeks, you will need to come back for a follow-up appointment for a touch-up (most brows fade slightly after the first appointment, so a touch-up is usually included in the price). This appointment usually only lasts 1.5-2 hours

The Healing Process:

  • After your first appointment, you can expect your brows will be slightly puffy and red

  • Avoid alcohol and aspirin that may thin your blood for 24 hours after

  • They will also be much darker than the end result. This is normal and part of the healing process (don’t worry, they will fade up to 40% over the coming weeks, hence the touch-up appointment)

  • Over the coming days they will still be dark and start to scab. It’s important not to scratch them or pick off the scabbing (this will rip off any pigment that is trying to settle into your skin)

  • After about 10 days or so the scabbing should fall off on it’s own

  • No down time is required for this procedure. You can go about your daily tasks as normal

  • Avoid getting them wet. Showering can be tricky, just try your best to not get them wet. Do not immerse them in water so no sweating or swimming for at least 2 weeks

  • Avoid makeup around the brow area for 10 days at least

  • If you have any questions in this time, feel free to contact your technician. They are happy to answer any questions you have
